Literacy Achieves, established in 1997 as the Vickery Meadow Learning Center, operates as a non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas, dedicated to English literacy and life skills training. The organization serves non-English speaking adults and their young children, aiming to foster self-sufficiency and enhance community well-being. Starting with a focus on the ethnically diverse, low-income Vickery Meadow neighborhood, the entity has expanded its footprint to include campuses in West Dallas and East Dallas. Currently, the organization provides free educational services to approximately 1,200 adults and 330 young children each year.
The organization addresses common barriers such as transportation, childcare, and scheduling conflicts that often prevent non-native speakers from accessing education. Adult English Literacy Program classes are available during morning, afternoon, and evening shifts across seven proficiency levels, utilizing both classroom and computer instruction. A two-generation approach allows daytime classes to run concurrently with the Early Childhood Program. Evening sessions specifically accommodate adults who work during standard business hours.
The Early Childhood Education Program offers a literacy-rich environment for children aged four months to five years. Enrollment in this program requires a parent or caregiver to be simultaneously enrolled in the adult program, ensuring families learn together while children prepare for elementary school. All adult classes are taught by compassionate volunteers who provide support while building mutual respect within the learning community.
