This internship is designed as a comprehensive 3-year program, ideally spanning a student's sophomore, junior, and senior academic years. Participants will gain hands-on laboratory experience supporting the Crocker Science Center, preparing equipment, supplies, and chemicals for courses within the College of Science.
The role offers a unique opportunity to work as part of a dedicated team while reporting directly to the Manager of Educational Laboratory Facilities. Students will learn from and receive feedback from experienced staff, growing from basic maintenance roles into leadership positions over the course of the program.
Applicants should have completed and passed at least an introductory-level lab course in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics (e.g., CHEM 1215, PHYS 2015, or BIOL 1615). Advanced labs in these subjects are also accepted, even if an introductory course was not taken.
Sophomore Year Students begin with basic prepping and maintenance of stockroom areas, including chemical inventory. The role starts with a maximum of 10 hours per week, requiring shadowing of a team lead. Hours increase to 15 in the second semester and 20 in the third semester, depending on performance.
Junior Year Participants take on an increased role in stockroom maintenance and begin training incoming sophomore inductees. Students advance into team lead positions within laboratories or on special projects, assuming responsibility for one or more lab courses.
Senior Year Senior interns supervise junior and sophomore members, manage basic accounting associated with laboratory costs, and attend Dean's Office Staff Meetings. The role includes mentoring and guiding incoming team leads, as well as shadowing Laboratory Specialists on advanced classes.
