The Section of General Surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, NH, is part of Dartmouth Health, New Hampshire's only academic health system. As the state's most expansive provider of care and the largest private employer, Dartmouth Health serves a network of more than 2,300 providers across northern New England. The Trauma & Acute Care Surgery team is an established, collaborative group dedicated to managing high-volume trauma and emergency general surgery cases within a Level I Trauma Center.
This full-time Physician Assistant position is dedicated to inpatient care on the Trauma & Acute Care Surgery service. The role is grounded in a multidisciplinary team approach, managing patients across the general medical floor, step-down units, and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. A unique advantage of this position is the ability to follow patients through all phases of their hospitalization, from the trauma bay to discharge planning.
The Physician Assistant will work closely with nursing, consulting services, general surgery residents, rehab services, case management, and attending physicians. Daily responsibilities include evaluating acutely ill trauma and surgical patients, creating and executing care plans, and coordinating complex social situations to ensure safe, successful discharges. The role requires a strong interest in the care of injured and acutely ill general surgical patients, maintaining a patient and family-centered focus throughout the hospital course.
As a Level I Trauma Center, this position offers abundant educational opportunities. The team participates in biweekly Advanced Practice Providers lecture series, monthly Emergency Medicine lecture series, weekly Morbidity & Mortality conferences, and Surgery Grand Rounds. Daily rounds provide continuous opportunities for learning and teaching alongside attending and resident physicians.
Beyond the professional environment, the role offers the chance to live in an area known for its unmatched quality of life. New Hampshire features four distinct seasons, a vibrant outdoor lifestyle, and proximity to mountains, hiking trails, and the seacoast. The region provides easy access to major cities and airports, along with the financial benefit of no state sales or income tax.
