The Technical Writer I serves as a vital support asset to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Safety Service Center (SAFECEN) in Norfolk, VA. In this on-site capacity, you will be the bridge between complex operational realities and clear, actionable documentation. Your work ensures that safety guidance, procedures, reports, and communications are not only accurate but also accessible and compliant with strict federal standards.
This role exists to safeguard the Coast Guard's mission by maintaining the integrity of its documentation lifecycle. You will guide subject matter experts through established publication processes, translating technical and safety information into user-friendly content that supports mission-critical operations. From drafting original guidance to managing version-controlled archives, your contributions directly impact the clarity and effectiveness of safety communications for the entire organization.
Your day involves a dynamic mix of independent writing and collaborative engagement. You will work closely with Coast Guard subject matter experts and program staff to gather technical inputs, conduct interviews, and clarify requirements. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to the rigorous editing and quality assurance of documents, ensuring they meet high editorial standards for grammar, tone, and formatting.
You will also play a key role in project lifecycle support, managing meeting documentation, tracking deliverables, and coordinating publication timelines. Whether you are refining a procedural manual, preparing a presentation, or ensuring Section 508 compliance, your focus remains on delivering polished, compliant, and mission-aligned products.
This position is based on-site in Norfolk, VA. Currently, until the new USCG Safety Service Center facility opens, the technical writing team operates on a rotation between remote work and a single on-site desk to ensure continuous coverage and direct coordination with SAFECEN staff. Once the new facility is fully operational, the team will transition to a fully on-site arrangement as defined by the Government.
Candidates selected for this role will undergo a standard federal hiring process, which typically includes a review of qualifications, potential interviews, and a background check to ensure eligibility for government support roles.
