Founded in 1895, Union Settlement is an East Harlem-based nonprofit and a pioneer of the settlement house movement. For over 128 years, we have provided critical, innovative programming to children, youth, families, and older adults. Today, our dynamic, diverse workforce of more than 350 employees serves over 10,000 individuals and nearly 1,000 businesses annually across 33 program sites. We act as a connector, convener, and advocate, empowering New Yorkers to gain opportunities, develop skills, and achieve their dreams.
The Summer Group Leader serves as a vital link within our Youth Development & Opportunity department, dedicated to fostering an environment where participants can explore their potential. This role is designed to provide youth with access to learning, mentorship, and creative self-expression that they might otherwise not receive. You will help cultivate interests, broaden worldviews, and build self-efficacy through a blend of social-emotional, educational, and recreational activities.
In this position, you will be the face of our program during the summer months. Your day will involve preparing spaces for engagement, leading workshops in disciplines such as sports, technology, performing arts, or STEAM, and guiding participants through project-based activities. Beyond facilitation, you will ensure the safety and well-being of youth during dismissal and off-premises trips, while collaborating with activity specialists and tutors to manage classroom dynamics. This role requires a balance of structure and flexibility, allowing you to challenge participants to help others and become engaged in their community.
Interested candidates should submit their application materials to be considered for this part-time position. The selection process involves a review of qualifications, including a mandatory background, criminal record, and reference check. Selected candidates will be contacted for further steps to discuss fit and availability.
