About the Role

The Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) serves as a critical guardian of patient safety within healthcare settings. This role is dedicated to the meticulous cleaning, sterilization, and preparation of medical instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring they are safe for use in surgical procedures and patient care. By maintaining rigorous infection control standards, the SPT directly supports the delivery of high-quality healthcare.

Day in the Life

Your work begins with the decontamination of soiled instruments, utilizing manual and machine-assisted methods to ensure thorough cleaning. You will operate advanced sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves and steam sterilizers, while adhering to strict protocols for packaging, labeling, and cycle parameters. A significant portion of your day involves inspecting instruments for damage or wear, managing inventory levels to ensure operating rooms are fully stocked, and maintaining detailed records to comply with regulatory standards.

Collaboration is key; you will work closely with surgeons, nurses, and fellow technicians to ensure timely instrument availability and address any processing delays. You will also stay current with industry best practices, participating in ongoing training to master the latest sterilization techniques and infection prevention strategies.

Compliance and Safety

This position requires strict adherence to guidelines set by the Joint Commission, OSHA, and the CDC. You will be responsible for maintaining a sterile work environment, utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), and conducting regular audits to ensure all processes meet safety and regulatory requirements.
