About the Role

The Old Globe is pleased to announce fall stage management apprentice positions for the 2026 season. As one of the country's finest regional theatres, we attract nationally known actors, directors, and designers. This apprenticeship offers a full-time commitment (5 to 6 days a week) where you will work alongside AEA stage managers throughout all aspects of the rehearsal process.

Apprentices will be involved in daily rehearsals, technical rehearsals, production meetings, and understudy rehearsals. There will be opportunities to observe the calling of shows, backstage operations, and other critical production elements. This is a unique chance to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment while contributing to the theatre's mission.

2026 Apprenticeship Opportunities

Applications are now open for the following specific productions:

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (One position available)

    • Seeking bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates.
    • Application window: September 30, 2026 – November 19, 2026.
  • Globe For All (One position available)

    • Application window: September 25, 2026 – October 29, 2026.

Note: Applications for these apprenticeships will close on July 1, 2026.

Compensation & Benefits

Stage management apprenticeships are paid a non-exempt hourly rate of $17.75/hour (or the San Diego minimum wage, whichever is higher). Additionally, apprentices are considered company members and receive perks such as complimentary tickets and free entrance to Balboa Park attractions.

Academic Credit

If you wish to receive academic credit, it is your responsibility to coordinate class credit with your school. The Old Globe will cooperate with your institution to complete any necessary paperwork. Current enrollment in an academic program is not a prerequisite for this program.

The organization also maintains new play development programs for professional and community-based writers alongside the Shiley Graduate Theatre Program with the University of San Diego. The venue has hosted numerous world premieres that have achieved success on Broadway and at regional theatres nationwide. Notable titles developed at the facility include A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Bright Star, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
