The Special Education Teaching Assistant at Emerson Elementary plays a vital role in supporting the educational journey of students with disabilities. Working under the guidance of the Classroom Teacher and Building Principal, this position is dedicated to enhancing the learning experience through both instructional and non-instructional support. The primary focus is to assist teachers in meeting the unique needs of their students, ensuring a balanced program that encourages observation, inquiry, and growth.
In this full-time capacity (6.5 hours per day, 178 days per year), you will function as an integral part of the school environment. Your day involves reinforcing lessons, working with students individually or in small groups on academic studies and life skills, and implementing behavior modification plans tailored to individual needs. The role extends beyond the classroom, requiring assistance during recess, lunch, and safe transportation to and from the bus. You will also maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while upholding strict confidentiality regarding student records.
This position requires a high level of physical engagement. The work environment involves regular movement, including sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and balancing. Employees must be prepared to lift or move up to 100 lbs (such as lifting a child from the floor) and push or pull items up to 80 lbs (such as children in wheelchairs). The role also includes assisting with hygiene and toileting activities, which may involve transferring and lifting students, as well as sanitizing classrooms and equipment.
Candidates should be aware that the work environment carries potential hazards, including exposure to communicable diseases, contact with blood and body fluids, and the possibility of physical injury from aggressive behavior.
