The Special Education Teaching Assistant at Wheaton Warrenville South High School plays a vital role in supporting the educational journey of students with disabilities. Working under the guidance of the Classroom Teacher and Building Principal, this position is dedicated to enhancing the instructional and non-instructional experience for students in a high-needs environment.
The primary focus of this role is to assist teachers in meeting the unique needs of their students. You will help facilitate a balanced program of instruction, reinforcing lessons and providing opportunities for students to observe, question, and investigate. The day-to-day responsibilities involve working with students individually or in small groups on academic studies and basic life skills, while also implementing behavior modification plans designed for individual needs.
Beyond the classroom, this role requires active participation in the daily life of the school. You will assist students during recess, lunch, and bus transportation, ensuring their safety and well-being. The position also involves maintaining positive relationships with students, staff, and parents, while upholding strict confidentiality regarding student records and progress.
This is a full-time position (6.5 hours/day, 178 days/year) for the 2026-2027 school year. The starting hourly rate is determined by the CEA collective bargaining agreement, with a base rate of $17.23. Additional incentives are available: $19.23 for assignments in high-needs classrooms, and $23.23 for those in high-needs classrooms who complete a 40-hour Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training program through Relias Academy.

This role operates within a dynamic school environment that may involve exposure to communicable diseases, contact with body fluids, and potential physical injury from aggressive behavior. The position is physically active, requiring the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and run. Employees must be capable of lifting or moving up to 100 lbs (such as a child from the floor) and pushing or pulling items up to 80 lbs (such as children in wheelchairs).
