The Special Education Teaching Assistant at Bower Elementary School plays a vital role in supporting the educational journey of students with disabilities. Working under the guidance of the Classroom Teacher and Building Principal, this position is dedicated to enhancing the learning experience through both instructional and non-instructional support. The primary focus is to assist teachers in meeting the unique needs of their students, ensuring a balanced program that encourages observation, questioning, and investigation.
This role is integral to the daily life of the classroom, requiring close collaboration with students individually and in small groups. Assistants reinforce lessons, implement behavior modification plans, and support students during various activities including recess, lunch, and transportation. The position also involves maintaining positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while upholding strict confidentiality regarding student records and progress.
The work environment presents specific challenges inherent to special education settings. Employees may face potential exposure to communicable diseases, contact with blood and body fluids, and the risk of physical injury from aggressive behavior. The role is physically active, requiring the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and run. Assistants must be capable of lifting or moving up to 100 lbs (such as lifting a child from the floor) and pushing or pulling items up to 80 lbs (such as children in wheelchairs). Additionally, duties may include assisting with hygiene and toileting activities, including transferring and lifting students, as well as sanitizing classrooms and equipment.
Candidates must hold one of the following current Illinois licenses or approvals: a Professional Educator License (PEL), a Substitute Teaching License, an Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed-Paraprofessional Educator, or a Short Term Approval (STA) for Paraprofessionals. Specific requirements for the STA include being at least 19 years old and providing proof of high school graduation.
