This position serves as a Special Education Teacher at GEMS School, dedicated to providing and supervising comprehensive educational services and interventions. The role ensures that the unique educational needs of all enrolled individuals are effectively addressed through a structured and supportive learning environment.
The teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing classroom activities while providing continuity of services. A key aspect of the position involves supervising non-exempt classroom personnel, including teaching assistants and aides, to foster a cohesive team approach to student success.
The role is grounded in behavioral science, requiring the teacher to demonstrate expertise in evaluation, measurement, goal planning, and instruction. Daily responsibilities include conducting initial and ongoing criterion-based assessments, preference assessments, and alternate assessments to track student progress.
Collaboration is central to the position. The teacher meets regularly with colleagues and staff to discuss new learning targets, behavior management plans, and the analysis of skill acquisition data. Working alongside a support team led by a Coordinator or Department Head, the teacher develops Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and ensures all program documentation meets state requirements.
The teacher also plays a vital role in communication, providing ongoing progress updates to families and maintaining a positive, productive dialogue with all members of the student's team, including program managers, to facilitate learning across environments. Professional growth is encouraged through participation in introductory and ongoing learning opportunities focused on behaviorally based teaching strategies.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong behavioral background, particularly regarding autism and other developmental disabilities. The role requires physical capabilities, including the ability to lift 50 lbs independently and perform all necessary physical interventions. Additionally, candidates must meet the requirements to drive Springbrook vehicles as needed.
