This position serves as a vital member of the surgical team, providing expert support and maintenance of instruments and equipment before, during, and after procedures. The role is designed for a Senior Surgical Technician who either supervises other technicians or possesses at least two years of acute Operating Room experience with the demonstrated ability to perform complex techniques under general supervision.
In this capacity, you will coordinate the configuration of equipment to ensure ease of use, arranging instruments and supplies according to specific instructions. You will play a critical role in patient safety by checking all equipment for sterility, cleanliness, and functionality prior to the start of a case. Your day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with patient positioning, scrubbing in as primary or secondary staff, and actively participating in the counting of sponges, needles, and instruments to adhere to hospital safety policies.
Beyond the operating room, you will be responsible for room turnover, cleaning, and the washing and sterilization of equipment. You will also collaborate with the manager to recommend guidelines for equipment use and the purchase of new supplies. As a Senior Surgical Technician, you may be called upon to motivate and provide work direction to other employees, though this role does not include the authority to hire, fire, or discipline.
You will be working within a Labor Management Partnership environment, requiring a willingness to adapt and collaborate across disciplines. The role demands versatility across a wide range of surgical specialties, including minimally invasive, general, ENT, orthopedic, vascular, open heart-thoracic, spine, urology, GYN, podiatry, maxillofacial, and neuro surgery. Additionally, you may be asked to participate in training RNs and other disciplines in the scrub role, fostering a culture of continuous learning and cross-functional support.
To succeed in this role, candidates must hold a High School Diploma or GED and possess a Basic Life Support certification. Certification by the Association of Operating Room Technicians or affiliation with the Association of Operating Room Nurses qualifies candidates for the Senior Surgical Technician title. While specific technical skills and experience are detailed in the requirements section, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, the ability to read and comprehend instructions, and basic computer proficiency.
