About the Mission

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is dedicated to providing a safe statewide transportation system that promotes the efficient movement of people and goods. Our vision is to serve the people of Florida with a well-planned network that supports economic growth, prioritizes the environment, and strives to be congestion and fatality-free.

As part of the "OneFDOT" team, we foster a culture built on Trust, Relationships, Respect, Empowerment, and Communication (TRREC). We encourage our team members to grow through engagement, professional development, and access to hundreds of training courses.

About the Role

Join the Heartland Operations Center in Sebring as a Senior Equipment Operator. In this full-time position, you will be a vital part of the team working to improve safety and enhance mobility across Florida's transportation system. You will operate vehicles and a variety of large equipment, including sewer cleaners and hydraulic excavators, while performing minor maintenance on state roadways.

Your day will involve coordinating and directing maintenance activities for an assigned crew, which may include supervising Department of Corrections inmate crews. You will assist in selecting materials, planning workloads, and maintaining daily records and reports. The role requires performing independent manual labor, temporary traffic control, and basic construction tasks such as carpentry, masonry, and painting. Additionally, you will train crew members in heavy equipment operation and traffic control procedures.

This position is critical for emergency response. Incumbents must be ready to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and serve on the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT). The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions, on different terrains, and in high-volume traffic environments.

Hiring Process & Application

To ensure the integrity of our hiring process, all applicants must complete their own work. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to assist with qualifying questions, work samples, or interviews is strictly prohibited; any breach will result in removal from consideration.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers; visa sponsorship is not available. Applicants must meet specific driving record requirements and register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on successful applicants.

For questions regarding this posting, please contact Timothy Bevins at (863) 471-4869 or Timothy.Bevins@dot.state.fl.us.

Equal Opportunity & Culture

The Florida Department of Transportation values the service veterans and their family members have given to our country and supports the hiring of returning service members and military spouses. Veterans' preference is applied in accordance with Florida law.

We value and support the employment of individuals with disabilities. Qualified individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and reasonable accommodations are provided upon request in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Florida Statutes.

The State of Florida supports a drug-free workplace. All employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug testing.
