The Local Audit and Finance Division (LAFD) plays a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and strong financial management across Michigan's local governmental units (LGUs). In accordance with Public Act 2 of 1968 (PA 2), Federal and State statutes, and established professional accounting and auditing standards, LAFD is responsible for developing and maintaining uniform accounting and reporting formats for counties, cities, townships, villages, and other governmental entities. The division also conducts audits of LGUs when specific statutory criteria are met.

We seek a candidate who is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and committed to public service to serve as a recognized resource within our Audit Section. This role provides a unique opportunity to support Michigan's local governments and strengthen financial transparency across the state.
In this position, you will act as a trusted advisor, providing expert interpretation of audit and accounting standards as they apply to local government reporting. You will lead the development, revision, and implementation of audit and accounting policies, creating and maintaining the guidance, manuals, and standardized forms used by Michigan LGUs and their auditors. Your work will directly contribute to advancing uniformity, compliance, and best practices across local governmental financial reporting statewide.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse stakeholders. This role requires a balance of independent analysis and collaborative policy shaping to enhance the effectiveness and consistency of the Audit Section.

Official Transcripts: Must contain the college/university name and address, degree conferred, date granted, and coursework completed. Foreign Transcripts: Applicants with degrees from foreign institutions must have their credentials evaluated by NACES or AICE unless the degree is already recognized by CHEA. This evaluation must be submitted at the time of application.

This position requires work to be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate prior to being appointed; relocation expenses are not reimbursed.
The role is eligible for remote work up to five days per week, with monthly in-person meetings at the Austin Building in Lansing. Selected candidates must have a safe, designated workspace and secure internet access with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Occasional onsite work is required, and remote arrangements are subject to management approval.

Signing Bonus: New hires for the Auditor classification will receive a one-time signing bonus of $2,500. This is paid as a $1,250 gross pay adjustment on the first pay warrant and the remaining $1,250 upon completion of one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service. If the employee leaves within one year of appointment, they will be required to pay back the entire bonus.
