As an Armed Security Officer at Rush University Medical Center, you will serve as a vital guardian of the campus, providing physical protection for patients, staff, and visitors while safeguarding property. Reporting to a Security Supervisor, you will exemplify the Rush mission and values by enforcing rules, regulations, and laws, and by documenting any infractions or safety hazards. This role is critical to maintaining a secure environment where healthcare can thrive.
Your shift will involve a dynamic mix of fixed, walking, and vehicular patrols across all RUMC buildings and grounds. You will act as the first line of defense, monitoring access control, managing visitor flow, and controlling traffic patterns. The role requires high situational awareness to identify security hazards and respond effectively to emergency situations, including Code Red, Blue, Triage, and Orange alerts. You will also perform dispatch functions, conduct basic investigations, and assist local police agencies when necessary. Whether preparing detailed incident reports or providing security escorts, your work ensures the safety and continuity of operations at the hospital.
To succeed in this position, you must hold a valid driver's license (Illinois, Indiana, or Wisconsin) with an acceptable driving record. You are required to possess and maintain a Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC) and a valid Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) permit. Candidates must have completed 28 hours of firearm training and be eligible to obtain a Firearm Control Card (FCC) within 90 days of employment. Additionally, International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) certification is required within six months of hire. While a high school diploma or GED is mandatory, previous hospital security experience is preferred but not required.
This role demands physical readiness, including the ability to stand or walk for the majority of the tour and withstand weather extremes during external assignments. You must be capable of wearing body armor and successfully demonstrating the use and maintenance of firearms and departmental equipment. Strong customer service skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment when handling confidential matters are essential.
