About the Role

As an Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN), you will serve as a vital member of the surgical team, delivering direct patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Your work ensures safe and effective surgical outcomes through close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals.

Day in the Life

Your day begins with preoperative preparation, where you assess patients' medical histories and current conditions to develop individualized care plans. You will verify surgical consent, review medications, and prepare patients both physically and emotionally for their upcoming procedures.

During the intraoperative phase, you will assist in preparing the operating room environment, ensuring sterile conditions and the proper functioning of surgical equipment. You will collaborate with the team to position patients, monitor vital signs, and assist with anesthesia induction and maintenance. Anticipating the surgeons' needs is key, as you will pass instruments, sutures, and supplies while maintaining strict sterile technique and aseptic practices.

Patient advocacy and safety remain your priority throughout the surgical experience. You will monitor patients' responses to interventions, addressing concerns and intervening promptly to prevent or manage potential complications. Once the procedure is complete, you will transfer patients to post-anesthesia care units (PACUs) or recovery rooms, continuing to monitor vital signs and postoperative status. This includes assessing surgical incisions, applying dressings, managing drainage devices, and ensuring patient comfort and pain management.

Accurate documentation of intraoperative events, patient responses, and medications administered is essential. You will communicate effectively with the healthcare team, providing updates on surgical progress and postoperative outcomes. Additionally, you will stay current with advancements in surgical techniques, equipment, and nursing practices through continuing education and participate in quality improvement initiatives and team debriefings to enhance patient care outcomes.
