The Charge Nurse serves as a vital link between the nursing staff and unit leadership, facilitating and assisting with all levels of nursing care for a group of patients during a single shift. Under the supervision of the Nursing Unit Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator, or Hospital Supervisor, this role is directly accountable to the Nursing Coordinator for the unit.
In addition to leadership duties, the Charge Nurse frequently assumes all or partial staff nurse responsibilities, ensuring seamless patient care delivery. The position requires active participation in day-to-day problem-solving, managing communication between shifts, and supporting the overall functioning of the unit by monitoring resources and identifying systems that may interfere with effective client care.
As an educator, the Charge Nurse contributes to the development of in-service programs, clinical orientation for new staff, and patient and family education. This role also involves fostering interdepartmental communication, participating in quality assurance activities, and supporting the organization's philosophy and goals through active engagement in committees and special projects.
