About the Role
As an Advanced Respiratory Therapist at VCUHS, you will provide safe and effective respiratory care across the entire lifespan, from neonates to geriatric patients. This role is designed to serve as a vital clinical resource and educator for patients, families, and the broader hospital staff. You will function as a shift team leader in the absence of a supervisor, ensuring seamless operations and high standards of care.
Your day-to-day involves initiating, monitoring, and maintaining mechanical ventilation, including CPAP and BiPAP, while utilizing advanced clinical skills to assess the effects of all ventilator changes. You will perform comprehensive respiratory care assessments and interventions, ranging from airway clearance and inhaled medications to complex procedures like tracheostomy changes and intubation. Additionally, you may assist with diagnostic modalities such as blood gas analysis and bronchoscopy, ensuring the quality and reliability of test results.
Depending on your assignment, you may also provide critical support in Labor & Delivery or perform external transports for critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients, managing comprehensive equipment and medical gas administration. Throughout your shift, you will demonstrate fiscal responsibility, maintain accurate documentation, and actively participate in quality improvement activities and continuing education to support the mission of VCUHS.

VCU Health is looking for candidates who meet the following requirements: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Therapist; Current NBRC registry as RRT or CRT eligible for RRT exam; Must pass NBRC Registry Exam within 6 months of hire; Current CPR certification; Basic computer skills; and Working knowledge of common critical care equipment.
