This role is part of the Behavioral Services department at the MATS Center, a key component of UNM Health Systems. The team is dedicated to supporting patients navigating the complex intersection of behavioral health and legal systems, ensuring they receive timely and appropriate care within a secure and compassionate environment.
As a Patient Registration and Financial Services Specialist, you will serve as the vital first point of contact for individuals entering the healthcare system, including Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agencies (PICLEA). This position is unique in its focus on the pre-registration and intake process for Ambulatory and Outpatient operations, ensuring that every patient is properly identified, insured, and financially assessed before care begins.
Your day will involve a dynamic mix of administrative precision and empathetic customer service. You will verify insurance coverage, secure necessary prior authorizations, and guide patients through complex financial assistance programs, including UNM Health Systems charity care, NM Medicaid, and other state or federal resources. A significant portion of your time will be spent interacting with patients and families to collect accurate demographic and financial data, resolving outdated information, and coordinating appointments. You will also act as a liaison between clinical staff, providers, and insurance payors to streamline the authorization process and ensure seamless care delivery.
While this role involves no direct patient care, it is critical to the operational flow of the department. You will manage front desk operations, handle high-volume phone inquiries, reconcile cash and billing reports, and maintain strict adherence to hospital policies. The position requires a high degree of accuracy in data entry and documentation within systems like Cerner and Siemens, as well as the ability to navigate sensitive situations with professionalism and discretion.
Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted directly by the hiring team. The process typically involves a review of qualifications followed by a discussion regarding experience in healthcare registration, financial assistance, and customer service. Specific details regarding interview stages will be communicated upon application review.
