This role is situated within the Behavioral and Mental Health department, specifically under the BHO - Admitting/Registration - UPC unit. The team serves as the critical first point of contact for patients entering the UNM Health Systems, ensuring a seamless transition from arrival to care. The department is dedicated to maintaining high standards of operational efficiency while providing compassionate support to individuals and families navigating complex healthcare and financial landscapes.
As a key member of the Admitting and Registration team, you will manage the pre-registration and registration functions for the Ambulatory and Outpatient Operations area. This position is vital for verifying insurance coverage, benefits, and required referrals prior to patient visits, ensuring that financial and administrative hurdles are cleared before care begins.
You will serve as the primary liaison between patients, clinical staff, and insurance providers. Your day will involve professional phone handling via an ACD system, assisting patients in navigating financial options such as UNM Health Systems financial assistance, NM Medicaid, and other state and federal programs. A unique aspect of this role involves acting as the first contact for Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agency (PICLEA) upon their arrival for care. While this position involves no direct patient care assignments, you will assist patients in locating departments, coordinating appointments, and referring families to appropriate resources.
The role requires meticulous attention to detail in data entry and documentation within hospital systems like Cerner and Siemens. You will be responsible for obtaining authorizations for surgeries and procedures, assigning necessary medical codes (ICD-9/10, CPT), and managing cash reconciliation. Additionally, you will play a training and outreach role, educating registration personnel and clinical staff on business practices and process flows to maintain tight operational efficiency.
Candidates must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of directly related experience. Bilingual proficiency in Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo is highly valued but not required.
