This role is situated within the Behavioral and Mental Health department, specifically under the BHO - Admitting/Registration - UPC division. The team serves as the critical first point of contact for patients entering the UNM Health Systems, ensuring a seamless transition from arrival to care. The department is dedicated to maintaining high standards of operational efficiency while providing compassionate support to individuals and families navigating complex healthcare and financial landscapes.
As a key member of the Admitting and Registration team, you will manage the pre-registration and registration functions for the Ambulatory and Outpatient Operations area. This position is vital for verifying insurance coverage, benefits, and required referrals prior to patient visits. You will act as the primary liaison between patients, clinical staff, and insurance providers, ensuring that all financial and administrative prerequisites are met before care begins.
Your day will involve a blend of high-volume data entry, patient interaction, and financial navigation. You will interview patients and families to collect accurate demographic and financial information, process applications for state and federal programs (including NM Medicaid and UNM Health Systems financial assistance), and assist self-pay patients in understanding their financial options. A unique aspect of this role is serving as the first contact for Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agencies (PICLEA) upon their arrival for care.
Beyond administrative duties, you will function as a front desk resource, handling professional phone calls via the ACD system, managing walk-in patients, and providing after-hours information desk coverage. You will also coordinate with the Blood Bank and Health Information Management departments to re-identify patients and organize folders for floor visits. While this is a non-patient care role, you will assist patients in locating departments, scheduling appointments, and referring them to appropriate services and resources.
Candidates with a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of directly related experience are encouraged to apply. Bilingual proficiency in Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo is considered a valuable asset for serving our diverse community. The position is a full-time, day-shift role with a potential for shift rotation and travel to various work sites.
