This position is part of the Behavioral Services department at the MATS Center, a key component of UNM Health Systems. The team is dedicated to providing accessible, compassionate care to individuals seeking behavioral health support, ensuring that administrative and registration processes run smoothly to facilitate patient access to treatment.
As a Registration and Patient Access Specialist, you will serve as the vital first point of contact for patients, particularly those in the custody of law enforcement agencies (PICLEA), as well as walk-in and scheduled visitors. Your primary mission is to ensure accurate patient intake, verify insurance eligibility, and navigate complex financial assistance programs so that patients can focus on their care.
In this part-time, day-shift role, you will manage the full spectrum of pre-registration and registration functions. You will verify insurance coverage, obtain necessary prior authorizations, and assist patients in understanding their financial options, including UNM Health Systems financial assistance, NM Medicaid, and other state or federal programs. The role requires a high degree of accuracy in data entry, coding (ICD-9/ICM-10, CPT), and documentation within hospital systems like Cerner and Siemens. You will also act as a liaison between clinic staff, providers, and insurance payors to coordinate benefits and authorizations.
Beyond administrative duties, you will provide exceptional customer service by answering phones, managing the front desk, and assisting patients with locating departments or scheduling appointments. You will also handle sensitive tasks such as collecting patient valuables, reconciling cash, and obtaining necessary signatures for Medicare and financial forms. This role is non-clinical but is essential to the operational flow of the department, requiring you to maintain open communication with clinical areas and ensure adherence to all hospital policies.
Candidates with a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of directly related experience are encouraged to apply. Bilingual proficiency in Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo is highly valued and may be considered a non-essential qualification.
UNM Health Systems is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to building a diverse workforce and consider qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
