This role is part of the Behavioral and Mental Health department within the BHO - Admitting/Registration unit at UPC. The team serves as the critical first point of contact for patients entering the healthcare system, ensuring a seamless transition from arrival to care. We are dedicated to maintaining high standards of efficiency, accuracy, and compassion while navigating complex insurance landscapes and financial assistance programs.
As a Registration and Admitting Specialist, you will manage the pre-registration and registration functions for our Ambulatory and Outpatient Operations. This position is vital for verifying insurance coverage, benefits, and required referrals prior to a patient's visit. You will act as the primary liaison between patients, families, clinical staff, and insurance payors, ensuring that all necessary authorizations are secured and that financial options are clearly communicated.
Your day will involve a blend of administrative precision and direct patient interaction. You will interview patients to collect accurate demographic and financial information, process applications for state and federal programs (including Medicaid and UNM Health Systems financial assistance), and assist self-pay patients in navigating their financial options. A unique aspect of this role is serving as the first contact for Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agencies (PICLEA) arriving for care.
While this is an administrative role with no direct patient care assignments, you will be the face of the hospital for many visitors. You will handle professional phone calls via the ACD system, manage front desk operations, and coordinate with the Blood Bank and Health Information Management departments. You will also play a key role in training and outreach, ensuring that both registration personnel and clinical areas maintain open communication and efficient process flows.
Candidates with a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of directly related experience are encouraged to apply. Bilingual proficiency in Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo is highly valued and considered a non-essential qualification that may enhance your candidacy.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our organization. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
