This position is part of the Behavioral Services department at the MATS Center, a vital component of UNM Health Systems. The team is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support within a specialized behavioral health environment, ensuring seamless integration between clinical services and patient administrative needs.
As a key first point of contact for the Ambulatory and Outpatient Operations area, this role serves as the operational backbone for patient intake and financial navigation. You will manage pre-registration and registration functions, ensuring that insurance coverage, benefits, and required referrals are verified before a patient's visit. The position requires a high level of professionalism in handling phone inquiries via an ACD system and acting as the primary liaison for Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agencies (PICLEA) upon their arrival for care.
A significant portion of your day will involve guiding patients through complex financial landscapes. You will screen patients for coverage and assist them in navigating financial assistance options, including UNM Health Systems programs, NM Medicaid, and other state and federal resources. This includes performing intake applications for the State of NM Medicaid and determining eligibility for various programs such as Medicare, Commercial insurance, and Indian Health Service. You will also serve as a liaison between clinic staff, providers, and insurance companies to coordinate financial benefits and prior authorizations, ensuring that all necessary documentation is accurately processed and submitted.
Candidates with a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of directly related experience are encouraged to apply. Bilingual proficiency in Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo is highly valued and may be considered a non-essential qualification. The interview process will focus on verifying your experience in patient registration, data entry, and financial assistance navigation, as well as your ability to maintain accuracy and confidentiality in a healthcare setting.
