This role is situated within the Behavioral and Mental Health department, specifically under the BHO - Admitting/Registration - UPC division. The team serves as the critical first point of contact for patients entering the UNM Health Systems, ensuring a seamless transition from arrival to care. The department operates with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, and compassionate service, managing the complex administrative needs of outpatient, inpatient, and emergency admissions.
As a key member of the Admitting and Registration team, you will perform pre-registration and registration functions for the Ambulatory/Outpatient Operations area. This position is vital for verifying insurance coverage, benefits, and required referrals prior to a patient's visit. You will act as the first contact for Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agency (PICLEA) arriving for care, as well as the primary liaison for patients navigating financial options.
Your day will involve professional and efficient phone handling via the ACD system, contacting patients to update demographics, and assisting individuals in navigating financial assistance programs such as UNM Health Systems charity care, NM Medicaid, and other State and Federal Programs. You will also serve as a liaison between clinic staff, providers, and insurance companies to coordinate financial benefits and prior authorizations. While this role involves no direct patient care, you will assist patients in locating departments, scheduling appointments, and referring families to appropriate resources.
The position requires a high level of attention to detail for data entry, coding (ICD9/ICPT), and documentation within hospital systems like Cerner and Siemens. You will also manage cash reconciliation, balance payments, and ensure adherence to all hospital and departmental policies. This is a full-time, day-shift role (1.00 FTE) within an office environment that may occasionally require travel to various work sites or shift rotation.
Candidates must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of directly related experience. Bilingual proficiency in Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo is considered a valuable asset. Specific credentials are not required for this position.
