You will join the Mary Brigh 6D unit, a progressive care environment specializing in adult heart and lung transplant patients and cardiac surgical patients. This 14-bed unit provides specialized care for procedures such as coronary bypass grafts, valve repair/replacements, left ventricular assist devices, and congenital anomaly repairs.
Care in this unit is relationship-based, focusing on physiologic monitoring, patient education, and discharge planning through a collaborative multidisciplinary approach. You will provide extensive education to newly transplanted heart and lung patients, covering medications, lab and vital sign monitoring, lifestyle modifications, and emotional support. The role assumes responsibility for ECG monitoring with rhythm identification and interpretation, as well as managing equipment such as temporary pacemakers, chest tubes, central lines, and nasogastric tubes.
The unit environment encourages professional development, teamwork, and shared governance, striving for continuous improvement through evidence-based practice. As a Registered Nurse, you will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, accountable for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care. You will also provide leadership through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership positions, and quality improvement efforts.
