Arlington County Department of Environmental Services (DES) operates the Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP), managing the County's wastewater treatment infrastructure to ensure strict compliance with federal and state environmental regulations. The Pretreatment Program Coordinator serves as a critical liaison between the WPCP, the EPA, and local industries, leading special studies and managing environmental compliance programs to protect public health and the environment.
This position is dedicated to coordinating the federally-mandated Industrial Pretreatment Program. You will act as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies, developing local discharge limits, writing permits, and managing the Enforcement Response Plan. The role involves a blend of office-based analysis and field work, including conducting inspections and sampling at industrial discharge sites and laboratory environments.
As the WPCP's liaison with the EPA, you will prepare program reports for federal, state, and County agencies while tracking regulatory issues. You will also maintain the County's Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Policy, overseeing software updates and enforcement correspondence for food service establishments. This role requires interpreting complex federal and state regulations, such as the Clean Water Act, and advising leadership on necessary code modifications and program procedures.
Arlington County requires all applicants to thoroughly complete every section of the application, including prior job responsibilities and supplemental questions. A resume is required but will not replace a completed application; incomplete applications will not be considered. Please do not write "see resume" in response to questions, as your written responses are a required part of the selection process.
Candidates selected for this position must pass a pre-employment background check, which includes criminal, driving, education, professional licensure, and credit history reviews. A valid driver's license is required, or the ability to use alternative transportation methods. Additionally, candidates may be asked to provide negative TB results at the time of hire.
Arlington County is committed to advancing diversity, equity, access, and inclusion across all services, activities, and programs. This position is classified as essential, meaning the selected candidate must be available for callback and may be required to work during evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergencies. While the role includes flexibility and telework options pending supervisor approval, it is not a full-time remote opportunity.
