Norfolk State University’s Police Department is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of the entire university community. The department provides continuous services to protect the lives and property of individuals on campus. As a senior-level management role, the Police Sergeant will lead initiatives that enforce university, municipal, and state ordinances, working in direct support of the department's mission to maintain a secure environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Reporting directly to the Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant serves as a pivotal leader in law enforcement activities. This role involves directing and supervising independent patrols, inspections, and investigations while managing the compilation and preservation of arrest and evidence materials. The incumbent is responsible for planning and organizing departmental goals, ensuring strict compliance with regulations, and handling all infractions.
A significant portion of the day involves mentoring subordinates, instructing officers on proper duties, discipline, and conduct, and preparing work schedules. The Sergeant also coordinates joint law enforcement efforts with other departments, conducts special investigations, and plays a key role in administrative reporting, event coordination, and budgeting for security personnel and equipment. Additionally, the role requires testifying in judicial proceedings and developing training programs to enhance officer proficiency.
