About the Role

This recruitment is exclusively for certified police officers seeking to join the City of Miami Police Department. The role is central to the department's mission of protecting life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Officers serve as the frontline of public safety, engaging in specialized investigative procedures, managing family crises, and acting as Field Training Officers to guide new recruits.

The position requires independent judgment and the ability to act without direct supervision during emergencies. Officers patrol designated areas, often in a patrol vehicle, to preserve law and order, prevent crime, and enforce traffic regulations. The role involves high-stakes interactions, from responding to emergencies like homicide and robbery to mediating community conflicts and resolving quality-of-life issues using problem-solving models like SARA (Scanning, Analysis, Response, Assessment).

A key component of this role is community policing. Officers are expected to establish partnerships with residents, merchants, schools, and local organizations to identify problems and explore effective solutions that enhance the quality of life in their assigned zones. Additionally, Field Training Officers play a vital mentorship role, instructing and evaluating novice officers during their on-the-job training period.

Hiring and Application Process

This is a non-competitive recruitment with a strict cap of 300 applications. Only applicants who have submitted all required documents will be considered. Applications received without the proper documentation attached will be disqualified.

  • Applicants must upload clear, legible copies of all required documents directly to the employment application. Resumes are not accepted in place of the application.
  • Required Documents: Proof of age (Driver's License, Birth Certificate, etc.), proof of current FDLE certification (Basic Recruit Certificate of Compliance or exam completion), and a valid driver's license.
  • Veterans Preference: Veterans claiming preference must submit all forms DD-214 (Member 4) and the applicable FDVA Certification Forms with the application.
  • City Resident Preference: City of Miami residents may receive selection preference. Applicants must submit two of the following documents: a utility bill, valid FL Driver License/ID, property tax statement, lease agreement, homestead exemption, motor vehicle registration, school records, or a W-2/1099 tax form.

  1. Orientation
