About the City and Team

The City of Puyallup is a vibrant community of 43,000 residents situated at the foot of scenic Mount Rainier. Known as a regional commercial center, the city boasts a strong, diversified economy, excellent schools, amazing parks, and a lively downtown. We value a culture of excellence, service focus, collaboration, and integrity in all that we do.

The Planning Manager will lead the Planning Division within the Development and Permitting Services Department (DPS). This division includes planning services, permitting services, building services, fire prevention, development engineering, and code enforcement. The Planning Division itself consists of six employees dedicated to shaping the city's future through comprehensive planning and land use management.

About the Role

This is a supervisory, administrative, and professional position responsible for directing the Planning Division. The role exists to ensure the division meets its annual objectives while integrating current and long-range planning functions. You will oversee land use permit processing, public information efforts, and code compliance activities, ensuring that the city's growth aligns with its comprehensive plan.

In this role, you will supervise full-time, part-time, and temporary employees, managing their performance, training, and development. You will be the primary point of contact for the Department Director, Planning Commission, City Council, Hearing Examiner, consultants, developers, and the public. The work involves a mix of office-based strategic planning, field site visits, and attending evening meetings to present complex planning issues to decision-making bodies.

Hiring Process

This is an open continuous job posting with a priority application date of May 22nd. Only applications that include a response to the Supplemental Questionnaire will be accepted. Applicants whose qualifications most closely match the City's current needs will be contacted for testing and/or oral interviews. The appointing authority may conduct second interviews.

Following submission, you will receive an email acknowledgment. Selected candidates will be notified by email, normally within 15 working days of the closing date. Please note that no formal notification is usually sent to applicants not selected for an interview or test.

Our Commitment to Diversity

The City of Puyallup is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer and does not discriminate in any employer/employee relations based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital status, disability, genetic information, veteran's status, or any other basis protected by applicable discrimination laws. We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to participate in the application process and to perform the essential functions of the job.
