HII's Mission Technologies Division is a global team of over 7,000 professionals dedicated to delivering all-domain expertise and advanced technologies in service of mission partners. We are leading the next evolution of national defense—the data evolution—by accelerating national security solutions for government and commercial customers. Our capabilities span C5ISR, AI, Big Data, cyber operations, and the largest family of unmanned underwater vehicles in every class.
Within this division, the Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams provide expert solutions for submarine alterations and installations. We are committed to building the world's most powerful, survivable naval ships and defense technology solutions that safeguard our seas, sky, land, space, and cyber. As a values-driven organization, we put people's safety and well-being first, offering a supportive environment where skilled tradespeople, engineers, and technologists work together to ensure a future where everyone can be free and thrive.
This Pipefitter position supports the Platform Modernization team in working closely with skilled trades on active-class surface ships, submarines, and shore-based facilities. You will utilize various pipefitting processes, mechanical techniques, and related tools to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment, assisting with alterations and installations for fleet modernization across various contracts.
The role involves performing a variety of simple and complex tasks, both routine and non-routine, to meet standards at company, customer, and field locations. You will work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, and work orders to lay out, cut, fit, assemble, bend, and position pipe and tubing. A key aspect of the role is troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time, while also providing guidance and work leadership to less-experienced welders. You may serve as a group leader and participate in special projects as required.
This position requires significant travel (51-75%) to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Weekend and overtime hours are required depending on contract awards. Per diem, travel, and lodging expenses are covered by the company. The role demands the ability to work in extreme environments, including aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces, often involving high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions.
