This position serves as an integral member of the dialysis healthcare team, dedicated to providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, the role ensures compliance with organization policies and regulations set forth by federal, state, and corporate agencies. The core mission involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines while maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
The role is deeply committed to the organization's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities. Team members actively participate in process improvements designed to enhance patient satisfaction and help patients achieve their quality enhancement goals. In the Transitional Care Unit, the role specifically guides newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, coordinating care and assisting with the transition to home dialysis modalities.
A typical day involves a blend of direct patient care, technical operation, and environmental stewardship. You will welcome patients, assess their wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency. Responsibilities include performing cannulation, administering heparin as delegated, and initiating dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders for blood flow and dialysate flow.
Throughout the treatment, you will monitor the patient's response, manage intradialytic problems, and ensure all safety alarms are enabled. The role requires precise calculation of ultrafiltration goals and accurate documentation of vital signs and treatment parameters. Between treatments, you will clean and disinfect machines and surrounding areas to maintain infection control standards.
In the Transitional Care Unit, you will liaise with various staff members to ensure a seamless patient experience, assist with education on home dialysis products, and manage supply inventory. The position also involves collecting and preparing laboratory specimens and participating in training for direct patient care staff.
Candidates must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the mandated timeline. Successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification is required for continued employment. Additionally, all employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; however, failing this test does not automatically preclude employment, as the company will consider reasonable accommodations.
