This position serves as a vital link in the Animal Services mission, dedicated to the humane processing and care of impounded and surrendered animals. As a Non-Merit position serving at the discretion of the Department Director, you will operate within a safety-sensitive environment where your actions directly impact animal welfare and public safety.
You will be responsible for the end-to-end care of animals in the shelter, from intake procedures like vaccinations and ID tagging to monitoring health and managing daily kennel operations. The role involves a unique blend of animal husbandry, facility maintenance, and community service supervision. You will work cooperatively with the Animal Services Supervisor, inmate labor, and community service workers to ensure a sanitary and safe environment for both animals and staff.
Your day will likely involve a variety of tasks, including cross-checking lost and found databases to reunite pets with owners, transporting animals to veterinary clinics, and performing necessary euthanasia in accordance with state laws. The position requires adaptability, as schedules vary to include weekends and holidays, and you may be called upon to work on religious holidays to meet operational needs.
Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and a clean criminal background indicating eligibility for the supervision of inmates. Successful applicants will be required to obtain specific security training for inmate supervision from the Georgia Department of Corrections within six months of hire. This is an at-will position subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.
Regular and predictable attendance is essential. The role demands physical capability to operate various machinery and equipment, including animal traps, restraint poles, and transport vehicles, as well as the ability to lift up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
We are an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. This position is subject to the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures regarding inmate supervision.
