As a Para Sped Low Incidence professional, you will serve as a vital support partner within USD 259, working under the supervision of an administrator and the direct direction of a certificated teacher. This role is designed to facilitate the education of students with low-incidence disabilities, ensuring they receive the intensive services and personalized attention necessary for success.
You will be embedded in a regular classroom program where special education students are integrated, acting as a bridge between the student, the teacher, and the broader school community. Your presence is essential for managing classroom safety, supporting student behavior, and assisting with the physical and academic integration of students into the learning environment.
Your day is dynamic and physically active, requiring you to move seamlessly between instructional support, behavioral intervention, and personal care. You will assist students with basic needs—including hygiene, feeding, and physical transfers—while also supporting their academic engagement through questioning techniques and adaptive technology use.
A significant portion of your time involves collaborating with the teaching team to implement behavior plans, document student progress, and prepare instructional materials. You may assist with transportation duties, including supervising students on and off campus and assisting with bus loading. The role demands high manual dexterity and stamina, as you may need to lift up to 50 pounds (or 100 with assistance), react immediately to emergency situations, and utilize physical restraint techniques when necessary for student safety.
You will also serve as a liaison for communication, interacting with parents, support staff, and the school nurse to ensure a cohesive care plan. Whether you are interlining Braille materials, using low-vision equipment, or facilitating group instruction, your goal is to foster a positive, inclusive environment that builds student self-esteem.
Candidates must be prepared to pass a Physical Capacity Test (PCT) as part of the qualification process. Additionally, successful applicants will be expected to complete required in-service training in first aid, child abuse symptoms, and illness recognition. For those working in Title I schools, a minimum of 48 accredited college credits or a passing score on a state-approved assessment is required.
