As a Para Sped High Incidence, you will serve as a vital support partner to certified teachers in USD 259, working directly with students who have cognitive, communication, social, behavioral, and/or emotional disabilities. Your primary mission is to facilitate academic growth and adaptive skill development within a supportive classroom environment.
You will work under the supervision of an administrator and the direction of a licensed educator to assist in the daily education of students. This role is essential for ensuring classroom safety, managing student behavior, and fostering positive self-esteem. You will help bridge the gap between special education and regular education settings, supporting students in their integration efforts and self-advocacy.
Your day involves a dynamic mix of instructional support, behavior management, and student care. You will assist the teacher in organizing the classroom, implementing behavior plans, and integrating technology such as SMART boards and iPads. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to providing individual or group instruction, assisting with curriculum engagement, and helping students with basic needs including hygiene, feeding, and physical transfers when required.
Beyond the classroom, you may supervise students during school activities, assist with transportation to and from buses, and support students in community-based instruction. You will collaborate closely with a diverse team of staff, parents, and students, maintaining open communication through various channels and documenting student progress and behavioral occurrences.
Candidates must meet specific qualification profiles, including a High School Diploma or GED. For positions in Title I schools, a minimum of 48 accredited college credits or a passing score on a state-approved assessment is required. Additional training in first aid, child abuse symptoms, or illness signs may be necessary depending on the specific assignment.
USD 259 values professional growth and expects all employees to maintain high standards of punctuality, appearance, and confidentiality. Employees are required to attend staff meetings, PLCs, and parent conferences, and must complete a minimum of 20 hours of in-service training annually (reducing to 10 hours after three years).
