The Outdoor Education Instructor at Camp Marston serves as a guide and mentor for fifth and sixth-grade students (ages 10-12) within an immersive outdoor science school model. This position is designed for highly curious minds, offering a unique opportunity to deliver high-quality, engaging programming that blends hands-on natural history education with recreational leadership.
As a resident instructor, you will live on-site for the duration of the camp session, ensuring a supportive and safe community for all participants. Your day-to-day life involves a dynamic mix of teaching interpretive classes, leading diverse activities such as archery and climbing, and providing 24-hour supervision for assigned cabin groups. From evening transitions to emergency response, you will be the primary point of contact for camper needs, fostering an environment where safety and stewardship of the natural world are paramount.
This role is more than just instruction; it is about building a strong camp community. You will be fully immersed in the rhythm of the outdoors, from preparing detailed lesson plans and interpretive displays to participating enthusiastically in all camp activities. The position requires a deep investment in the camp's mission, including maintaining facilities, practicing environmental stewardship, and contributing to special events and larger projects.
Instructors are expected to exercise sound judgment, prioritizing the physical and emotional safety of the children above all else. Whether adapting instruction methods for diverse skill levels or managing program equipment, you will work closely with Program Coordinators and the Outdoor Education Director to ensure high-quality experiences that meet established learning goals.
Selected candidates will participate in a mandatory staff training period beginning August 31. The Outdoor Education season runs from August 31, 2026, through May 21, 2027. The schedule typically involves Monday through Friday at the overnight camp, with a rotating weekend requirement of one weekend per month followed by time off during the week.
