The Operator Training Specialist serves as a critical link between operational safety and workforce development within the transit organization. Reporting under the general supervision of the Safety Officer, this role is dedicated to fostering a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment for all personnel.
You will be responsible for identifying training needs and designing comprehensive programs that ensure compliance with County, local, state, and federal regulations regarding transit operations, vehicle safety, and driver certifications. The position requires a deep understanding of the Durham area, GoDurham routes, service policies, and fare structures to effectively guide both new and experienced operators.
Your day will involve leading operator trainees through classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel (BTW) training, ensuring they operate vehicles safely and efficiently while meeting high customer service standards. You will act as a resource for employees and departments, providing expert information on the safe operation of buses and assisting staff in converting CDL permits to full licenses through road, pre-trip, and skills testing preparation.
Beyond direct instruction, you will coach and mentor student operators to improve performance, conduct trail checks, and complete operator evaluations. You will also manage the documentation of training and disciplinary proceedings, develop certification programs for new equipment and procedures, and perform return-to-work, post-accident, and refresher trainings. As a backup to the Safety Officer, you may be required to report during inclement weather or states of emergency.
This position may be assigned to the first shift (8am to 5pm) or the second shift (10am to 7pm). Based on business needs, some weekend work is required. The role demands the ability to work under stressful conditions, particularly in employee relations situations, and requires a valid North Carolina CDL driver's license.
