The Operations & Business Development Associate internship is a 6-week immersive experience designed to provide hands-on exposure to operational execution, capture management, proposal development, and federal growth strategies. This program is specifically tailored for students interested in the Air Force and broader Department of Defense (DoD) markets.
Interns will shadow senior leadership and actively contribute to operational planning, customer engagement preparation, business development pipeline activities, and internal strategy development. The curriculum is structured to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world federal operations, preparing participants to transition into full-time roles supporting federal operations and growth initiatives similar to a senior program manager or senior director.
Week 1: Introduction to Maximus Gain a deep understanding of Maximus' history, values, federal customer base, lines of business, and service offerings. You will identify key internal functional lanes and points of contact essential for supporting federal contract operations.
Week 2: Operations & Federal Business Overview Learn how Maximus structures and executes federal contracts. This week focuses on operational delivery models, governance structures, customer engagement approaches, and mission-focused support across the DoD and other federal agencies.
Week 3: Business Development Fundamentals Explore the federal business development lifecycle. You will identify and evaluate key stakeholders, systems, workflows, and processes used to qualify and position new business opportunities in support of strategic growth efforts.
Week 4: Capture & Proposal Support Understand capture management and proposal development by evaluating program objectives, customer requirements, and solution approaches. You will gain insight into the roles and responsibilities involved across the capture and proposal lifecycle.
Week 5: Operational Planning & Growth Alignment Apply operational planning principles, staffing models, and risk considerations to support new business pursuits and recompetes. The focus is on ensuring alignment between proposed solutions and executable delivery capabilities.
Week 6: Strategic Growth & Transition Planning Evaluate how operational performance and customer relationships inform long-term growth strategies. The program concludes with the development of a transition plan and a capstone brief demonstrating your readiness to support operations and business development efforts.
