About the Team

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is dedicated to promoting health, safety, resilience, and opportunity for Maine people. The Department provides health and social services to approximately a third of the State's population, including children, families, older Mainers, and individuals with disabilities, mental illness, and substance use disorders.

The Office for Family Independence, Division of Support Enforcement & Recovery (DSER), is responsible for ensuring that all non-custodial parents contribute to the economic support of their children. The Division handles the development and implementation of rules and policies necessary to establish paternity, locate non-custodial parents, and enforce child support orders. DSER operates offices statewide, including the Biddeford location where this position is based.

About the Role

The Office Associate II serves as a paraprofessional providing essential administrative support within the Child Support Office. This role is pivotal in facilitating the daily operations of the Division, ensuring that families receive the support they need through efficient case management and document processing.

In this position, you will act as a key point of contact for parents, answering questions and providing information about the child support program. Your day will involve managing time-sensitive correspondence, processing legal documents such as wage attachments and license revocations, and building cases for individuals applying for services. You will also coordinate scheduling for genetic testing and manage document imaging. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage in purposeful, transformative work that directly impacts the well-being of Maine families.

This is a full-time position with a Monday-Friday schedule (8 AM - 5 PM). The role allows for partial telework with management approval and requires occasional travel to other Division locations.

Hiring Process

To apply, please submit a resume and a cover letter online via the State of Maine Career Page. Your cover letter should describe your skills in the following areas as expert, skilled, or novice:

  • Outlook, Excel, MS Word, and comparable word processing/spreadsheet applications
  • Data Entry (entering data and narratives)
  • Written and Verbal Communications, including keyboarding and telephone skills
  • Customer Service
  • Teamwork

All documents must be submitted in PDF or Word format. If you are a current State of Maine employee, please submit your application through the internal process using the Find Jobs report in PRISM. Seasonal employees without PRISM access should apply through the State's career page and indicate their prior State employment.

For questions regarding this position, please contact Ethan Norcross at Ethan.Norcross@maine.gov or (207) 286 2483. If you are unable to complete the online application, please contact the Human Resources representative listed on the job opening for assistance with an alternative submission method.

Selected candidates will be subject to pre-employment screening, including verification of qualifications and a fingerprint-based criminal history record check. Please note that this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or STEM OPT extensions.

Our Culture & Commitment

There's a job and then there's purposeful, transformative work. Our aim is to create a workplace where you can learn, grow, and continuously refine your skills. We appreciate that many skills and backgrounds can make people successful in this role.

As an Equal Opportunity employer, Maine State Government embraces a culture of respect and awareness. We are committed to creating a strong sense of belonging for all team members. Our process ensures an inclusive environment for applicants of all backgrounds, including diverse race, color, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, physical or mental disability, religion, age, ancestry, national origin, familial status, or genetics. Reasonable accommodations are provided to qualified individuals with disabilities upon request.

We encourage applicants from historically excluded communities to apply even if they do not check every box in the posting. Research shows that people from these communities often hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement; we encourage you to go for it and let us know how your experience and passion set you apart.
