Education Through Music is a non-profit organization dedicated to partnering with New York City Public Schools to reintegrate music teachers and programs into school curricula. We distinguish ourselves by providing a bridge for teachers who are not yet certified to teach in public schools, helping them build their programs and eventually secure positions with the Department of Education (DOE).
With a presence across all five boroughs, we maintain partnerships with 50 public schools and provide music education to over 18,000 children. We believe music is essential for a well-rounded education, serving as a critical tool for students' social and emotional well-being and a driver for establishing equity and success. We are seeking passionate teachers who are eager to make a difference in their communities.
As a Music Teacher-Mentor, you will serve as a vital support to lead and teach assigned classes under the guidance of a mentor. Your day-to-day involves fostering an orderly, productive, and safe learning environment while assisting with school-wide concerts, including leading rehearsals and managing logistics like sound and staging.
You will play a key role in tracking student progress using ETM benchmarks and formal rubrics, while helping to create a visually engaging and print-rich classroom. This role requires consistent reinforcement of classroom procedures, participation in professional development training, and the maintenance of a teaching portfolio including observation journals and unit plans. If supporting ensembles, you will assist with instrument inventory, pullout lessons, and rehearsals.
Candidates who do not currently hold 'eligible' status for classroom teaching from the NYC Department of Education (DOE) will be required to undergo fingerprinting and a background check through the NYC DOE PETS system. Only those cleared by the DOE and granted 'eligible' status are eligible for hire by Education Through Music.
Please note that we are unable to provide H1B sponsorship or visas for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
Education Through Music is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
