This position serves as a dual-role opportunity combining the leadership of an Orchestra Director with the daily engagement of a Classroom Teacher. As an Orchestra Director, you will prepare students for two major concerts annually, manage the string ensemble music library, and coordinate participation in festivals, contests, and community performances. You will work closely with the Fine Arts Coordinator to align curriculum, budget, and equipment needs while organizing parent appreciation and student recruitment activities.
Simultaneously, as a Classroom Teacher, you will implement district curriculum and create a positive, structured learning environment. You will plan meaningful instructional tasks, adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning styles, and maintain high expectations for student achievement. This role requires a strong interdisciplinary approach, blending the artistic rigor of music education with the foundational skills of general education.

If you are interested in becoming a contract teacher without a traditional teaching degree, the South Dakota Department of Education offers an Alternative Certification program. Candidates must obtain their Alternative Preliminary Certificate before applying for a teaching position.
Please note that a valid South Dakota teaching certification with an endorsement in Elementary Music Education or K-12 Instrumental Music Education is required. Questions regarding certification can be directed to the South Dakota Department of Education.
South Dakota Codified Law 13-42-71 requires all certified educators to complete at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years. Compliance is verified through district accreditation reviews, and you will be required to provide your most recent certificate of completion prior to starting employment.
