The Welder I is a vital member of our fabrication team, responsible for the precise assembly, tack welding, and MIG welding of iso-bend pipe, fittings, and special products. This role ensures that every component meets strict engineering and customer-supplied specifications, playing a key part in delivering high-quality industrial solutions.
In this position, you will interpret blueprints and sketches to calculate cut lengths, set up pipe severing machines, and assemble fittings using press tools or other appropriate equipment. Your day involves a blend of technical precision and physical capability, from visually inspecting components for defects and cleanliness to performing complex welding procedures, including TIG welding when required. You will also handle material movement using hand trucks and carts, ensuring safety protocols like protective shields and restricted area signs are in place before beginning any welding tasks.
To succeed in this role, candidates must possess fabrication experience and the ability to work from blueprints. A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. Physical demands include the ability to lift parts weighing up to 50 lbs without assistance; any parts exceeding this weight require a team lift.
A critical requirement for this position is the ability to pass the Crane welding qualifications test. This assessment includes a plate test (fillit welds) on an 8-inch coupon, schedule 40 pipe, open root, and three passes (root downhill, hot pass uphill, cover pass uphill), with a strict requirement to pass X-ray inspection standards.
While not mandatory, preferred qualifications include five or more years of welding experience in a manufacturing environment, ASME Section IX MIG certification (or the ability to obtain it within a reasonable period), and three or more years of experience working with carbon steel.
Crane Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
