The Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center (FSC) is dedicated to providing comprehensive medicolegal death investigations. As a vital component of the county's public safety infrastructure, the team ensures thorough, independent, and legally sound inquiries into all reported deaths, serving as a primary resource for law enforcement, the legal community, and grieving families.
This professional position serves as the primary point of contact for decedents' next of kin and a key liaison for law enforcement throughout the investigation process. You will respond to all reports of death, determine jurisdiction, and conduct independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding a death. The role requires assessing deceased bodies and disturbing scenes, which may involve hazardous environments, biological contamination, or extreme weather conditions.
Your day will involve gathering pertinent information from witnesses and relatives, collecting evidence such as medications and drug paraphernalia, and documenting scenes through photography. You will be responsible for generating thorough Reports of Death and compiling clear, concise case files that detail medical history and circumstances surrounding the death. Additionally, you will assist with the final disposition of unclaimed bodies and provide training or presentations to students, interns, and public interest groups.
