About the Team
Amentum is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Technician I Apprentice to join our manufacturing team in Decatur, Illinois. Our team operates in a demanding industrial environment, supporting a 24/7 operation where reliability and precision are paramount.
About the Role
This position is designed for an apprentice ready to develop advanced expertise in facility mechanical systems. You will serve as a critical link in our maintenance workflow, responding to work orders, troubleshooting complex issues, and executing both preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment. The role requires a blend of hands-on mechanical skills, welding proficiency, and the ability to diagnose ventilation equipment, pumps, and fans.
As an apprentice, you will work primarily on the 2nd shift (2:00 PM – 10:30 PM), with hours that may vary based on business demand. Weekend schedules may be required to support continuous operations. You will be expected to identify and correct safety-related issues, perform independent equipment evaluations to prevent failures, and assist in the movement of heavy machinery and materials. Success in this role requires strong written and verbal communication to provide clear feedback to customers and ensure compliance with all codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
- check_circleTroubleshoot and repair HVAC equipment, blowers, fans, and heat exchange equipment
- check_circlePerform welding and fabrication tasks such as building custom fixtures and fabricating maintenance parts
- check_circleTroubleshoot and repair commercial doors from various manufacturers
- check_circleConduct preventive maintenance inspections including lubrication, cleaning, and filter changes
- check_circlePerform basic pipefitting repairs and troubleshoot basic electrical issues
- check_circleRecommends measures to improve maintenance methods and equipment performance
- check_circleAnalyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in solving technical issues
- check_circlePerform maintenance tasks using Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
- check_circleOperate measuring, diagnostic, and testing instruments to provide energy efficiency solutions
Requirements

Associates degree or technical certification in industrial mechanical, HVAC, Electrical or related Facility Maintenance discipline. Welding certification. Experience with building mechanical equipment operation, diagnostics and repairs. Experience performing preventive maintenance on facility related equipment. Experience performing pump repair, pipefitting, welding, fabrication, and millwright related work. Experience welding using MIG, TIG, and arc welders. Experience maintaining basic plumbing needs. Experience with basic electrical troubleshooting and repairs. Experience working in a CMMS environment.
