Maintenance Technician

About the Role

The Maintenance Technician serves as a vital support pillar for Descanso Gardens, ensuring the seamless operation of our facilities, grounds, and unique fleet. Reporting directly to the Garden Maintenance Manager, this role is designed to maintain the safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the gardens for millions of visitors. The position requires a versatile professional capable of handling diverse tasks ranging from general building repairs and HVAC maintenance to the specialized upkeep of our historic train and vehicle fleet.

Day in the Life

Your workday will be a dynamic mix of proactive maintenance and responsive problem-solving. You will conduct routine inspections of the facility's electrical systems, lighting, and HVAC units, performing repairs such as replacing fixtures, adjusting motors, and maintaining pumps. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to the care of Descanso's unique assets, including the 1/8th replica diesel train, electric carts, and heavy machinery like skid steers and tractors.

Beyond technical repairs, you will engage in carpentry, painting, and surface restoration projects to preserve the garden's beauty. You will also play a key role in safety compliance, utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to strict OSHA and IIPP guidelines while operating heavy equipment and working in varied environments, from indoor spaces to outdoor trenches. Interaction with staff and visitors is a core part of the role, requiring you to provide excellent customer service while addressing maintenance needs efficiently.

Hiring Process

Candidates selected for an interview will be expected to demonstrate their technical proficiency and ability to work independently. The process typically involves a review of qualifications, followed by an interview with the Garden Maintenance Manager to assess fit and experience. Successful candidates will undergo a background check and verification of their valid Class C California Driver's License before onboarding.
