This position serves as a vital part of the Arkansas Department of Transportation's maintenance operations. Under general supervision, the role focuses on keeping highways and facilities safe and accessible by operating specialized equipment and performing essential road maintenance functions. The team works to manage vegetation, clear debris, and respond to emergencies to ensure smooth traffic flow for the public.
A typical day involves a mix of equipment operation and manual labor. You will frequently operate single-axle dump trucks and tractors with attached mowing apparatus to control grass and weeds along highway right-of-ways. The role also requires using various power tools, such as industrial weed-eaters, chainsaws, and pole saws, for landscape maintenance and tree cutting.
Beyond mowing, the position involves hauling construction materials, loading and stacking bags of salt, sand, and chemicals, and picking up litter, including large tires and debris. You will also assist in setting up work zones by moving signs and cones, and frequently flag traffic to ensure safety during operations.
The role demands flexibility and resilience. You will work in all types of weather conditions, including noise, dust, and fumes. Occasionally, you will be called upon to respond to emergencies 24/7, such as natural disasters, severe weather events, or traffic accidents, and participate in ice and snow removal operations.
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license. Upon hiring, candidates are required to pass the written portion of the Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) exam with a tanker ("N") endorsement within the first 90 calendar days, and the driving portion within 180 calendar days. Failure to meet these timelines may result in demotion or termination.
A pre-employment drug and alcohol test is required for all contingent offers prior to starting work, subject to the ARDOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. This position is not eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship as it does not require a bachelor's degree or highly specialized theoretical knowledge.
