The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is dedicated to providing a safe and reliable multimodal transportation system that connects people and helps Oregon's communities and economy thrive. We are a hardworking team committed to keeping our roads and travelers safe through diligent maintenance and emergency response.
We actively encourage people from all backgrounds and abilities to apply for our positions. ODOT is an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer, ensuring we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or any other class protected by state or federal laws.
As a Highway Maintenance Specialist with the Mitchell maintenance crew in Region 4, you will play a vital role in operating equipment necessary to maintain and repair roadways, highways, bridges, and structures. Your work ensures the safety of Oregon's travelers, particularly during challenging weather conditions.
A day in your life will involve assisting with weather-related emergencies, operating snowplows and deicer trucks to clear snow, and performing minor surface repairs like pothole patching and concrete work. You will also maintain drainage systems, clear debris, manage roadside vegetation, and service heavy equipment. This role requires exposure to all weather conditions, noise, and heavy machinery, with the physical ability to navigate rough terrain and lift up to 60 pounds. You may be called upon after hours, on weekends, and holidays for emergency response.
For those interested in living on-site, the Mitchell maintenance station offers recreational vehicle (RV) hookups for $15 per month (covering water and electricity). If not using the RV, a maximum 45-minute response time to the station is required for emergency call-outs.
