The Automation System Programmer serves as a critical bridge between traditional mainframe operations and modern DevOps practices. In an environment defined by z/OS, DB2, IMS, CICS, MQ, and JES2/3, this position is dedicated to eliminating manual toil and enhancing system reliability. The role exists to transform routine operational workflows into self-healing, event-driven processes that ensure compliance with strict audit and security standards.
You will design and implement robust automation frameworks using Rexx, CLIST, JCL, and Ansible for z/OS. Your day-to-day involves developing scripts that handle WTOR confirmations, automate batch scheduling via IBM Workload Scheduler, and create mechanisms for proactive remediation of issues like MQ queue backlogs or DB2 log utilization. Beyond coding, you will collaborate closely with System Programmers, Operations, and Application teams to identify opportunities for efficiency gains, ensuring that every automated change is captured, version-controlled, and ready for audit review.
