Sargent & Lundy has been a trusted leader in nuclear engineering, design, and licensing since 1954. Our Nuclear Power Group is at the forefront of the industry's evolution, driving the future of clean, carbon-free energy. We specialize in small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced reactor technology (ART), and first-of-a-kind commercial reactor restart projects. Our work supports life extensions and digital modernization of existing nuclear plants, coal-to-nuclear conversion initiatives with the Department of State, and international nuclear new-build projects. With a commitment to safety, innovation, and sustainability, we provide cutting-edge solutions that power communities worldwide while reducing emissions.
The Instrumentation and Controls Engineering group is expanding to meet the growing demand as electric power generation clients digitize existing power plants and build new facilities. This team operates in a project environment where technical decision-making is collaborative, involving engineers and designers working on the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing power plant controls systems, specifically focusing on digital upgrades.
In this position, you will direct technical decision-making on major process controls engineering projects. You will tackle challenging assignments that involve investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of instrumentation & controls engineering issues. Your day-to-day work includes performing digital systems design development for PLC, DCS, HSI, networked computer systems, and digital instrumentation & control systems functional requirements for nuclear plant systems.
You will serve as a key liaison, coordinating systems design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements. This role involves preparing and reviewing detailed calculations, design documentation, and reports that present technical information clearly to meet client needs. You will also interface with vendors to review materials and equipment purchase specifications, perform independent reviews of work performed by others, and attend client meetings and site walkdowns to validate scope and ensure satisfaction.
A unique aspect of this role is the opportunity to perform consulting-level work for digital IOT, innovation, and strategic first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects for the nuclear industry. You will be expected to lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools. This includes guiding teams on how to automate calculations, summarize technical documents, and generate design documentation using AI or agentic AI tools, ensuring all results are rigorously checked. We value leaders who can oversee engineers programming or scripting to automate engineering tasks and those with additional learning in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Software Engineering.
Please note that we do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position. Applications are reviewed based on the essential skills and experience required for the role.
