Expand your court experience or begin your legal career as a District Court Law Clerk within the Minnesota Judicial Branch. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into judicial and court processes at the District Trial level, providing a direct courtroom perspective on the administration of justice.
Working directly with Judge Christina Stevens, you will support the functions of the court to uphold its mission of providing justice through a system that assures equal access for the fair and timely resolution of cases and controversies. The role involves performing professional legal research, preparing memoranda, opinions, and orders, and handling related administrative work to assist the Judge in their daily duties.
This opportunity is designed for two distinct groups:
Ideal candidates will possess knowledge of laws, court rules, and legal reference sources, along with an understanding of court practices and procedures. You should be able to communicate clearly and concisely with a diverse group of people, including attorneys and pro se parties, while demonstrating cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding.
In this role, you will engage deeply with the legal process. You may attend court sessions to observe proceedings and record case information, or perform specific courtroom duties during arraignments, motions, hearings, pre-trial conferences, and trials. These duties can include calling the calendar, swearing in jury panels and witnesses, and assisting in documenting court proceedings. Additionally, you will perform administrative duties within the Judge's chambers, ensuring the smooth operation of the office.
